OpenDoors Secures Financing for Supportive Housing Project

January 12, 2010 - 3:20pm

With support from the Corporation for Supportive Housing, OpenDoors has purchased a building at 485 Plainfield Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Providence to be converted to subsidized “green” housing units. Upon completion, the building will provide housing for clients, as well as program and office space. The building will also feature commercial space, with the aim of gearing this space towards complimentary services or employment opportunities for clients.

OpenDoors has secured two EPA grants for environmental remediation of the site, and has received commitment of Neighborhood Opportunities Program funding from the Housing Resources Commission for operating subsidies.

In addition, the City of Providence has committed its 2011 Home Funds allocation to the project, and the Providence Housing Authority will issue 19 project-based Section 8 vouchers to OpenDoors.  The project has also received support from Local Initiatives Support Corporation.

Construction will begin in February, as will site remediation. Once completed, the building will be the agency’s new resource center home, as well as the only supportive housing in RI specifically for formerly incarcerated individuals.

See our Housing Program webpage for up-to-date information on the project.
